Appeals Court Rejects Moratorium on Deepwater Drilling; Administration Crafts a New Moratorium Print E-mail
In response to an Appeals Court’s rejection of its original moratorium, the Obama Administration announced a new offshore oil moratorium. In an effort to cure problems with its original moratorium, the new ban defines deepwater drilling operations in a different way. Instead of focusing on the depth of the drilling operation (i.e., drilling rigs operating in more than 500 feet of water), the ban applies to any deepwater floating facility with blowout preventers. Trucking and motor fuels users support environmentally responsible drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and is concerned over the impact of the moratorium on the economy in the Gulf region and the impact that the moratorium will have upon the price of diesel fuel. The U.S. currently obtains about one-third of its oil from the Gulf region.
